Tzimmes (Done Wrong)

I’m adding a bunch of “family recipes” to my recipe binder and this is one of my favorites for Thanksgiving/Christmas. To my knowledge, traditional tzimmes is for Shabbat or Rosh Hashanah (according to the beaten up copied cookbook page that we’ve used for 15+ years) and originally, that’s what we made this for - a Unitarian Universalist celebration of Rosh Hashanah organized by a half-Jewish family in my childhood church. Anyway, my family loved the recipe, so we make it every year, but only realized much later that you aren’t supposed to mash the vegetables. Oops.

6 to 8 carrots, sliced
3 sweet potatoes OR yams, cut into cubes or sliced into 1-inch rounds
3 green apples, peeled and sliced
water, to cover
1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup brown sugar
A few pinches of salt

Add the carrots, sweet potatoes, and apples to a large pot, cover with water, and boil until tender. Drain.

In a large bowl, mash the cooked vegetables, then add the butter, sugar, and salt. Adjust seasonings to taste.
